Chaotic roads increasing traffic congestion

After overcoming the deadly coronavirus crisis, the capital Dhaka becomes normal again. However, there has been chaos on the roads of the metropolis for some time now. Dhaka residents are getting frustrated due to heavy traffic. Due to a lack of coordination between traffic management and service agencies, planning and master plans are not working to reduce traffic congestion. Although the number of vehicles is increasing day by day, the road has not increased. Traffic jams spread in various service companies like WASA, Titas, and City Corporation on the busiest routes. The drivers are driving without following the lanes, standing here and there, and picking up and dropping off the passengers. In some cases, modern signal lights have been installed for traffic management, but there is no digital touch on the road as the police control the signal at the behest of the hand. Besides, despite the increase in traffic congestion due to an undisciplined traffic system, there are allegations that there is more interest in bribery or filing cases against one segment of traffic police.

But responsible police officials say the number of vehicles in the capital has risen at a phenomenal rate since the corona infection lockdown lifted. At present, several times more cars are running on the roads of Dhaka than the average capacity. The traffic police were informed at the beginning of the fight or digging on the main busy street, but there was no coordination later. Day after day, the responsibility of traffic congestion falls on the shoulders of the traffic police. Although the liability of all concerned agencies. Although the traffic police try to maintain order on the road, most people are confused about obeying the traffic laws. The condition of the streets of the metropolis changes rapidly, and the character changes. One road signal system does not work on the other road. It is almost impossible to control the traffic smoothly by lighting the signal lamp for a certain period.

Mohakhali Traffic Police field sergeant Rafiqul said the number of vehicles in the capital had increased rapidly after the lockdown caused by the corona infection. In addition to the main road, the connecting highway and alleys are also being dug all the time. There are unfit and faulty vehicles, which is a big challenge for traffic management. Inexperienced and expired drivers are all on the road. Due to these reasons, the number of prosecutions or cases is increasing.

Some of the passengers think that the traffic jam on the roads on the one hand. On the other hand, the situation has become more evident in this stagnant situation, and even the drivers do not follow the instructions of the traffic police. And the traffic police is struggling to deal with the traffic jam caused by not following the rules. Passengers are being picked up and dropped off in buses and mini busses. Temporary shops have been set up even after occupying the road. In addition, private cars, trucks, vans, etc., are parked on the street.

The aggrieved passengers said that they finally left for their destination on foot after sitting on the road for hours. Many people went back home after seeing the traffic jam. Passengers are suffering from the work of big development projects in some streets. In many cases, the police are not playing an influential role.

According to the traffic police, in the last eight months (January-August), six lakh 33 thousand 572 cases have been registered across the country, including the capital Dhaka, to restore order on the roads. A fine of Tk 152.56 crore has been collected against the case. According to the same source, in the last three years, claims have been filed against 2,067,185 vehicles in the capital for violating traffic laws and obstructing the work of on-duty police personnel. A fine of Tk 158 crore 48 lakh six thousand 809 has been collected. But nothing is going to bring the discipline of the main road under control. Because most drivers and pedestrians do not want to obey traffic laws. As a result, accidents often happen.
