Sheikh Hasina and Modi Express Optimism About Strengthening Bilateral Relations

New Delhi, June 10, 2024 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their desire to further strengthen the existing bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries in the future.

Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud, in a press briefing this morning, stated, “Both leaders have expressed hope that the existing bilateral relationship will deepen in the coming days.”

This expectation was shared during a private meeting between the two Prime Ministers following the swearing-in ceremony of Modi’s cabinet on Sunday evening.

Dr. Mahmud mentioned that during the meeting, held in a very warm and friendly environment at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Bangladeshi Prime Minister invited her Indian counterpart to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time.

He added that under the visionary leadership of Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi, bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India have reached new heights.

The Foreign Minister informed that later, both Prime Ministers attended a banquet hosted by Indian President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Senior Indian ministers, members of the Bangladeshi delegation, and other invited government and state leaders participated in the dinner, where brief exchanges of views took place.

Dr. Mahmud shared that there was an exchange of pleasantries during the reception ceremony.

Responding to a question about the expectations and achievements from each other given that Narendra Modi has led his administration for the past 10 years and Sheikh Hasina for 15 years, the Foreign Minister said that Bangladesh and India share multifaceted relationships.

He noted, “There are many issues involved between the two countries. Since both governments are continuing their administration, there are some advantages to working together.”

Dr. Hasan Mahmud expressed hope, “Our multifaceted relationship will expand and deepen further in the future.”

Among those present at the briefing were Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Md. Mustafizur Rahman and Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Naimul Islam Khan.

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister arrived in New Delhi on Saturday at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of India’s new government.

This morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also held separate meetings with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and an Indian Union Minister at her place
