Labor Appeal Tribunal of Kakrail has annulled the six-month prison sentence given to Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus in a case involving allegations of labor law violations. The decision was made today, Wednesday (August 7), by Judge M.A. Awal of the Labor Appeal Tribunal in the afternoon. Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun represented Dr. Yunus in court.
On January 1 of this year, Dr. Muhammad Yunus and three others were sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment and fined 30,000 taka each by the court for violating labor laws. However, on the condition of appeal, Dr. Yunus and the other defendants were granted one-month bail.
The case against Dr. Yunus and three others was filed on September 1, 2021, in the Labor Tribunal. The charges were framed on June 6, 2023, and testimony began on August 22 of the same year, concluding on November 9. The final hearing ended on December 24 of the previous year. Since the sentencing, Dr. Yunus had been out on bail in the case.
On August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the prime minister’s position under pressure from public protests and left the country, marking the end of her 15 and a half-year rule. Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, there has been effectively no government in the country, leading to an unstable environment across Dhaka and the rest of the country.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the President held a meeting with a 13-member delegation from the anti-discrimination student movement at Bangabhaban regarding the interim government setup. Later, the Bangabhaban Press Wing announced that an interim government would be formed with Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the head. The names of other members will be announced after discussions with political parties.
According to a statement from Yunus Center, Dr. Muhammad Yunus is expected to arrive in Dhaka on Thursday. It is anticipated that he will then assume the role of head of the interim government.
