District Commissioners Propose Universal Military Training for Youth

The District Commissioners (DCs) have proposed introducing universal military training to ensure active participation of the youth in national defense. This proposal was put forward during the session on the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Division at the District Commissioners’ Conference held on Tuesday (February 18) at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

Following the session, the Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Abdul Hafiz, informed journalists that the DCs discussed ways to enhance civil-military cooperation. They proposed introducing orientation programs at the divisional level for civil administration officers to strengthen understanding and coordination with the armed forces.

Additionally, discussions were held regarding the potential launch of a “Universal Military Training” program for young people. Through this initiative, the youth could receive military training and contribute to national defense.

The DCs also suggested conducting special anti-terror operations in specific districts, particularly in remote and char (riverine) areas, where a larger security force and logistical support may be required.

Moreover, discussions took place on how the Bangladesh Navy could work more closely with the civil administration in protecting river resources and conducting operations against illegal jatka (juvenile hilsa) fishing.

Concerns were raised regarding the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) insurgent activities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, which are negatively impacting the tourism industry. The resulting decline in tourism is leading to job losses for the local youth, pushing some towards extremist activities. Possible solutions to address this issue were also discussed.
