Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, has said that tightening US immigration rules and preventing fentanyl from crossing the border are her top priorities. He said this after visiting the US-Mexico border yesterday. This is Kamala’s first visit to the area since the campaign for the 2024 presidential election began.
Yesterday, Kamala spoke in the border town of Douglas, Arizona. Douglas has a population of less than 17,000. In the speech, Kamala complained that Republican candidate Donald Trump is spreading fear and division about the impact of immigrants on the lives of American citizens.
Kamala Harris said, ‘I will take further steps to close the border between ports of entry.’ Kamala also vowed to ensure that those who cross the border illegally will be caught and barred from entering the United States for the next five years.
According to government data, nearly 7 million immigrants have been arrested for illegally crossing the US-Mexico border during the tenure of current US President Joe Biden. This number is more than the record level. Trump criticizes this. However, after Biden announced an anti-immigration ban earlier this year, the number of people crossing the border illegally has decreased.
White House officials said Kamala Harris spoke with Customs and Border Protection officials in Douglas. Kamala toured parts of a security fence built on the border between 2011 and 2012 during the Barack Obama administration.
In Douglas, Kamala meets a woman named Theresa Guerrero. Theresa Guerrero’s 31-year-old son, Jacob Guerrero, died of fentanyl poisoning.
Kamala said he would target the “entire global supply chain” of fentanyl to prevent the entry of illegal fentanyl.
Meanwhile, Trump yesterday blamed Kamala Harris for the growing trend of illegal immigration. In a speech given at Trump Tower in Manhattan, Trump said, ‘The architect of this destruction is Kamala Harris. He keeps talking about how he wants to solve the border problem. We just want to know, why didn’t he do the job four years ago? It’s a very simple question.’
Trump also accused Kamala of turning small towns in the US into refugee camps.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll last month found 43 percent of voters supported Trump on immigration. And 33 percent of voters supported Kamala. Among the remaining 24 percent, some did not know who to support, some refused to answer, and some supported someone else.
