Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sham Rezaul Karim has said that marine fisheries have a huge role to play in the development of countries economy.
The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled ‘Coastal Fisheries Development Management: Sunil Economy and Vision 2041 Perspective’ organized on the occasion of National Fisheries Week 2021 at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council auditorium in Farmgate on Wednesday. The seminar was organized by Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI).
At the time, the Minister said, “Through the best diplomacy of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, our sovereignty has been established in almost the same sea area of Bangladesh.” This sea is the biggest resource of our huge economy.
“If we can properly collect seaweed, such as conventional or unconventional fish and seaweed, these will be our biggest supply for export,” he said.
At the time, he said, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had declared with foresight after independence that fish would be the second major source of foreign exchange.
The minister added that the government is implementing a project to extract tuna and similar fish in the deep sea to extract marine fisheries. Hilsa management and research projects have been taken up. Space-friendly projects have been taken up in different parts of the country, including coastal areas and hilly areas.
Senior officials of the Ministry, Department of Fisheries and BFRI, fisheries scientists, researchers, university teachers and fishermen representatives were present at the seminar.
