Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called on the United Nations to take special and effective measures as soon as possible to stop the Ukraine-Russia war. He said, the sooner the war ends, the better it will be for the people. The Prime Minister made this call during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the Qatar National Convention Center on Saturday afternoon. Earlier, the Prime Minister arrived in Qatar’s capital Doha to attend the Fifth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC 5: From Potential to Prosperity). After the meeting, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen briefed the journalists. Sheikh Hasina said that the UN Secretary-General can take special initiatives to end the ongoing war in Ukraine as soon as possible. During the discussion on the Rohingya issue, the Prime Minister urged the Secretary-General to take special steps so that the citizens of Myanmar can return to their homeland. Referring to the steps taken by his government to relocate 30,000 Rohingya to Bhasanchar, he requested Guterres to assist in relocating more Rohingya there. Both the Prime Minister and the UN Secretary-General agreed that regardless of whether there is any change in the political arena in Myanmar, the Rohingyas must return to that country soon. In the meeting, Guterres praised Sheikh Hasina for her unprecedented success in development, diplomacy, and the fight against the Covid epidemic and said, “The achievements achieved are very encouraging. UN Secretary-General said they are proud of leaders like Sheikh Hasina; Who successfully dealt with the covid-19 situation and took Bangladesh further by dealing with the crisis due to the Ukraine war. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held a separate meeting with UNGA President Saba Karosi at the Qatar National Convention Center in the afternoon. In the briefing, the Foreign Minister said that Sheikh Hasina proposed the formation of an international forum involving South countries in the meeting. In response, the President of UNGA opined that this initiative should be taken before the next General Assembly session, saying that they will be engaged in the work of the annual assembly from July to September. In the meeting, UNGA President Sheikh Hasina’s leadership praised Bangladesh’s economic progress and referred to it as a ‘miracle’. The two leaders also discussed water management and the impact of climate change. A special VVIP flight (BG-325) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the Prime Minister and his entourage landed at Doha Hamad International Airport at 1:30 pm local time on Saturday.
