Due to heavy rainfall in Assam, the water level of the Jamuna River in Sirajganj has been rising for the past few days. In the last 24 hours, the water level has increased by 9 centimeters and is flowing 3 centimeters above the danger mark at the Sirajganj Hard Point. Consequently, the lower-lying lands in the floodplains are being inundated, causing houses to float. At least 2,190 families have been affected by the flooding, leading to waterlogging. The water level in the Jamuna River at the Sirajganj Hard Point has reached a record of 12.93 meters on Thursday (August 31). In 12 hours, it has risen by 9 centimeters and is flowing 3 centimeters above the danger mark (Bipatseema: 12.90 meters).
On the other hand, at Meghai Point in Kazipur, the water level has reached a record of 14.75 meters on Wednesday morning. In 24 hours, it has risen by 8 centimeters and is flowing 5 centimeters below the danger mark (Bipatseema: 14.80 meters).
Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman, the Executive Engineer of the Sirajganj Water Development Board, stated that the water level of the Jamuna River is rising due to heavy rainfall in Assam. The Bipatseema has been surpassed at the Sirajganj Point this morning, while at the Kazipur Point, the water is still 5 centimeters below the danger mark. He informed that the water could continue to rise in the next 24 hours.
As a result of the rising water levels of the Jamuna River, the low-lying areas in 42 unions of 5 upazilas of the district have been affected. The homes in these areas are also submerged as the water rises. In Chauhali Upazila, 1,015 families are already affected by waterlogging. People in Sadar Upazila’s Kaowakola, Meshra, Kaliya Haripur, and Soydabad unions are also suffering. Due to repeated inundations, the agricultural activities in these areas have been severely disrupted.
Hekmat Ali, the Project Implementation Officer of Chauhali Upazila, stated that at least 8,000 people from 2,190 families in the upazila have been affected by waterlogging. A list of these families has been prepared and submitted to the district office.
