Mahmudullah Riyad did not find a place in the squad for the Asia Cup, leading to discussions and criticisms. There had been debates about playing him in the number seven position. Bangladesh lost both of their Super Four matches in the Asia Cup, and Mahmudullah Riyad has returned to the team once again.
No one, including Afif Hossain and Shamim Hossain, performed well in the number seven position. When asked about this, Shakib Al Hasan clarified that Mahmudullah Riyad was playing as Taouhid Hridoy in the position. He considered the question irrelevant and mentioned that during the first three series, Riyad was not in the squad, but now he is back.
Shakib stated, “You see, Riyad Bhai was not part of the squad in the first three series. I don’t know if you all talked about it or not. Now you are saying (with a smile). I think the question is quite irrelevant. This is the situation.”
BCB has not officially informed ICC about the World Cup squad, but it can be changed without any reason until September 27. Shakib mentioned that everyone still has an opportunity. He emphasized the need for adequate rest for players who have been confirmed for the World Cup because they will be playing a lot of matches, including nine in the World Cup and two preparation matches.
Shakib said, “Everyone has an opportunity. Because most of our cricketers are playing in the Asia Cup. They need sufficient rest. Those who are confirmed for the World Cup, I think they need a break. Because there will be a lot of matches ahead, nine in the World Cup, two preparation matches. And we can’t afford injuries. We don’t have anyone strong enough on the bench, so if anyone gets injured, it will be easy to replace them. So it is important for us that everyone is fit and healthy.”
