In Canada, we have hired Amir Al-Ghawabik as the first anti-Islamophobia worker. This initiative has been undertaken to protect the Muslim community in the country from hate attacks.
Notably, according to police accounts, the highest number of hate attacks against Muslims in G7 countries occurred in Canada in 2021 and 2022. During that time, out of all the attacks on Muslims, 71% were Islamophobic in nature.
The most significant incident of Islamophobic hate crime in Canada occurred in 2021 against the Afzaal family, who were of Pakistani origin. The family fell victim to a premeditated attack, leading to murder charges and allegations of terrorism against the perpetrator, Nathaniel.
The rise in Islamophobic hate crimes in Canada has prompted the creation of this position, with various organizations stepping up to address the situation.
Amir is not only committed to raising awareness about Islamophobia but also to building bridges with various communities and working collaboratively with authorities. He will also advocate for Muslim concerns at the federal level.
Amir is a Canadian journalist and is known for his work in human rights activism. He has Egyptian roots, and his father was an engineer. He moved to Canada with his mother when he was just 2 years old.
