Despite Continuous Rain: The Air in Dhaka is Still Unhealthy

Dhaka is ranked 6th among 109 cities in the world in terms of air pollution. Dhaka scores 162 in IQAir’s air quality index (AQI). This air quality is considered ‘unhealthy’.

According to IQAir’s air quality index, Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur ranked first in air pollution in the world at 9:30 this morning. The city has a score of 174. In second place is Lahore, Pakistan, 167.

A score of 51 to 100 is considered ‘moderate’ or ‘acceptable’ air quality. A score of 101 to 150 is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’.

A score of 151 to 200 is ‘unhealthy’ air. A score of 201 to 300 is considered ‘very unhealthy’ air. A score of 301 and above is considered ‘disastrous’ or ‘risky’.

According to today’s list provided by IQAir, the amount of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) in Dhaka’s air is 11 and a half times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) standard. In today’s air condition, it is healthy to wear a mask when going out, says IQAir.

In Dhaka, the city dwellers spent the most number of days in the month of January in the inclement weather. The capital’s air quality was poor for a total of 9 days in January, the highest in the last 7 years.

A report by the Department of Environment and the World Bank in March 2019 identified three major sources of air pollution in Dhaka—brick kilns, vehicular smoke and construction dust.
