Bangladesh-India Prime Minister Will Inaugurate Three Joint Projects

Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will jointly inaugurate three real development projects today.

On Wednesday (November 1), the projects will be inaugurated through a video conference.

The three projects are the Akhaura-Agartala International Rail Link, Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line, and Unit 2 of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.

The Akhaura-Agartala International Rail Link project has been completed with the expenditure of Bangladeshi Taka 392.52 crore provided under the assistance of the Indian government. This rail link, which includes 6.78 kilometers of dual gauge and 5.46 kilometers in Tripura, is 12.24 kilometers long.

The Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line project has been implemented under the Indian government’s Concessional Line of Credit at a total cost of $388.92 million. This project will build approximately 65 kilometers of broad gauge railway lines in the existing railway network between Mongla Port and Khulna. This will connect Bangladesh’s second largest port, Mongla, with the broad gauge railway network.

The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project, with a total project cost of USD 1.6 billion under the Indian Concessional Financing Scheme, is a 1320 MW (2X660) super thermal power plant located at Rampal, Khulna Division, Bangladesh. This project has been implemented by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (Private) Limited (BIFPCL), a joint venture between India’s NTPC Limited and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). Both Prime Ministers jointly inaugurated Unit 1 in September 2022, and Unit 2 is scheduled to be inaugurated on November 1, 2023. The Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant will contribute to increasing electricity generation and ensuring power security in Bangladesh.

These projects are expected to enhance connectivity and ensure power supply in this region.
