Sri Lanka has faced another setback in the World Cup, having already spent a troubled time. In the midst of this instability, the Sports Minister of Sri Lanka, Roshan Ranasinghe, has dismissed all the board officials of the team.
After such uncertainty, Sri Lanka has received another blow. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended their membership. In a statement, the ICC has stated, “The ICC Board has considered everything in its meeting and decided that Sri Lanka Cricket has violated important rules. Especially, they needed to operate independently without government interference in cricket administration. They could not ensure that. The ICC Board will communicate the terms of this suspension to the relevant authorities in due course.”
Previously, the interim committee had announced the removal of the previous board and declared new committee members. Before that, the Secretary of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, Mohan de Silva, had resigned. He accused Sports Minister Ranasinghe of undermining confidence. Afterward, Ranasinghe initiated such incidents.
Former captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who led Sri Lanka to victory in the 1996 World Cup, was appointed as the chairman of the interim committee. However, the Sri Lankan Court of Appeals announced a two-week stay on the activities of the interim committee.
Meanwhile, in this World Cup, Sri Lanka has won only two out of nine matches played. They finished the tournament with just four points and returned home.
