ICME 2023 Global Award: Achievements of Bangladesh scientist Mazharul

In Birmingham, United Kingdom, the names of the winners of the 2023 Global Awards by IKEM (National Interdisciplinary Centre for Circular Chemical Economy) have been announced at a temporary event held at the Hilton Metropole Hotel. The Sustainability Division of IKEM has won the award for its exceptional research in plastic upcycling and carbon dioxide reduction. Bangladeshi scientist Mazharul Islam is a member of IKEM and has played a role in this achievement.
Mazharul Islam works as a senior researcher at Cardiff University. He is directly involved in the research conducted by the CircularChem Center, which focuses on the chemical process of plastic recycling. IKEM’s Global Awards are renowned as one of the most prestigious honors in the field of chemical engineering globally. IKEM has been working towards recognizing and honoring individuals and research institutions or industrial establishments for outstanding contributions in chemical, biological, and process engineering on a global scale since 1922.
This year, a distinguished panel of 30 experienced judges selected and awarded individuals and institutions in 19 categories, including pharmaceuticals, energy, industrial projects, innovative products, nuclear engineering, oil and gas, process automation, digital sustainability, and water services.
Mazharul Islam’s research aims to transform plastic through an innovative process into smaller elements. This transformation enables the creation of new plastic or conversion into carbon-based products, similar to burning fossil fuels like oil. These efforts are highly praised for providing a significant step towards solving issues associated with plastic waste. Additionally, these initiatives will contribute to creating a more sustainable economy.
Mazharul Islam, who earned his Ph.D. from the University of Hannover in Germany, has conducted research at the University of South Australia, the University of Paris (Université Paris-Saclay), the University of Bonn in Germany, and the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.
His primary research areas include sustainable combustion (green energy), lithium battery technology, circular plastic economy, and carbon dioxide reduction in industry. He has published six books and over 60 articles in international journals on these subjects.
