Hundreds killed in strong earthquake in China

In a powerful earthquake in China’s Northwest region, at least 111 people have died, and more than 230 have been injured. Several buildings have collapsed. The earthquake struck at 11:59 pm local time on Monday. As time passes, the number of casualties is increasing.

China’s national media, Xinhua, reported that the earthquake hit the border area of Gansu and Qinghai provinces. Rescue operations have begun in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1. Its epicenter was in the Lanjiaozhou area, 102 kilometers southwest in Gansu province, and the depth was 35 kilometers below the earth’s surface.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.9, although initially, it was reported as a magnitude 6. China, on the other hand, mentioned a magnitude of 6.2. Aftershocks have been felt several times after the earthquake.

After the earthquake, there are reports of power and water supply disruptions in some villages. Videos posted on social media show the roofs and remnants of collapsed buildings. Emergency rescue efforts have begun.

In a immediate statement after the earthquake, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that rescue operations would be undertaken promptly, and medical treatment would be provided to the injured. He emphasized efforts to minimize the number of casualties.

Such earthquakes are not uncommon in China. In August of the previous year, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck the eastern region of the country, resulting in 23 injuries though no fatalities. Several buildings collapsed in that incident.

In September, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in China’s southwestern Sichuan province claimed the lives of more than 60 people.
