Construction work of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is nearing completion. Electricity generation from this project will begin next year.
However, before that, in October of the current year, the power plant will be started on a trial basis.
Officials informed that construction work of the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is nearing completion. Preparatory work for commercial electricity production from the first unit by 2025 is progressing well. Subsequently, the second unit will commence production in the following year, 2026.
Officials further explained that the required electricity for starting this project will be procured from the Bangladesh Power Development Board. Preparation for electricity supply in the project area is also underway. The first phase of this work has already been completed. The remaining tasks will also be completed before October. Preparation has been made to start the trial operation of the first unit of the center before October.
Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafes Osman told Bangla News, “We are moving forward to start the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The first unit will be started on a trial basis in October.”
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, built with technology and financial assistance from Russia, is the country’s first nuclear power plant. This project is being implemented by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Corporation (BAEC). In this project, a Russian-made VVER-1200 reactor is being installed. Russia will also supply fuel for this project. Last October, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was able to detect uranium as fuel.
Russia is also training specialists for operating this power plant. Additional specialists are being sent to Russia for training. After the power plant is operational, these specialists will work there.
On this subject, Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafes Osman said, “Our team is moving forward well. All work, from construction to operation, has been completed successfully. Locals are also being sent for special training. They will work to operate the power plant after it starts.”
After starting the first Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, preparations are underway to set up the second nuclear power plant at the same location. Russia is responsible for implementing this second project. Preliminary discussions have already taken place between the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the head of Rosatom. Discussions have also begun between the relevant officials of the government and those of Russia on this matter.
