Cyclone Remal Hits Sylhet, Warning Signals Remain Active

Cyclone Remal has now positioned itself over the Sylhet region as a land depression. According to the weather office, it will bring more rain and move towards the Assam region of India after noon today (May 28). The Bay of Bengal remains turbulent due to the cyclone, and the weather office has maintained the local cautionary signal number 3 at the country’s four seaports.

After crossing the central part of the Bangladesh coast, Cyclone Remal, as a deep land depression, wreaked havoc in Dhaka and surrounding districts from 6 PM on Monday to 6 AM on Tuesday.

Since Tuesday morning, Remal has been positioned over Sylhet, causing approximately 249 millimeters of rainfall in the region. Within 24 hours until 6 AM, there was 224 millimeters of rainfall in Sylhet, 257 millimeters in Chandpur, and 208 millimeters in Madaripur, leading to heavy rainfall across the central regions of the country.

Meteorologists indicate that Cyclone Remal has similarities with Cyclone Aila, which caused heavy rainfall in the southwestern part of the country in 2009. However, Remal has resulted in heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across almost the entire country.
