Parliament Approves New Fiscal Year Budget

The National Parliament has approved the budget of BDT 7,97,000 crore for the fiscal year 2024-2025.

On Sunday (June 30), Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali proposed the budget, which was passed by voice vote of the parliament members. The session was presided over by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.

Prior to this, voting took place on 59 expenditure demands from various ministries and divisions. Among the cut motions proposed, three were discussed in detail. These were related to the Law and Justice Division, the Secondary and Higher Education Division, and the Ministry of Social Welfare. These were settled through voice voting after the discussions.

On June 6, Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali presented the budget proposal of BDT 7,97,000 crore, which is approximately BDT 36,000 crore more than the current fiscal year’s budget. The budget sets a growth target of 6.75% and an inflation target of 6.5%.

The budget approved on Sunday will come into effect from July 1.

After the budget proposal, 236 members of parliament, including the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Finance Minister, took part in the general discussion on the budget.

From June 11, members from the ruling party, Awami League, the opposition party, Jatiya Party, and other parties, as well as independent members, discussed the budget over a total of 11 days.
