Although starting with a loss, the Argentina U-23 team secured their place in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics by winning their next two matches. Today, they defeated the Ukraine U-23 team 2-0.
At the Groupama Stadium, Ukraine made more efforts to score throughout the match compared to Argentina. However, out of 11 shots, only three were on target, and they failed to score. In contrast, Argentina managed to score twice from four on-target shots out of eight attempts.
Both goals came after halftime. In the 47th minute, Thiago Almada scored to give Argentina the lead with a shot from outside the box assisted by Cristian Medina.
In the first minute of added time, Claudio Echeverri doubled the lead with a shot from inside the box. Argentina then confirmed their victory and advanced to the quarterfinals. With 4 points from three matches, they finished as the runners-up in Group B. Despite losing 2-1 to Morocco in their opening match, Javier Mascherano’s team bounced back with a 3-1 win over Iraq in their next game.
