Interim government under Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s leadership, list coming soon

Dr. Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. The full list of members will be announced within 24 hours, as informed by Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, following a meeting with the President.

At 12:30 AM local time on Tuesday, Nahid Islam told reporters after a meeting at Bangabhaban with President Mohammad Shahabuddin and the chiefs of the three armed forces.

Nahid said, “The discussions were fruitful. The government proposed by the student and citizen insurgents will be the final interim government. We received that assurance today from Bangabhaban. The interim government will be formed with Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the head, and it will be established in a short time. We have brought a preliminary list of this interim government, which includes representation from civil society and student groups. We will finalize this list quickly through discussions with various political parties.”

Nahid also mentioned, “We have brought a preliminary list of 10-15 people for the interim government. This will be finalized, and within 24 hours, the list and the interim government announcement will be made public.”

Regarding Dr. Yunus, he said, “Dr. Yunus had a minor operation today. He will leave for the country tomorrow and should arrive by tomorrow night or the following morning. By then, the list will also be finalized. We hope the interim government will take the oath of office within just over 24 hours.”

Regarding the country’s situation, Nahid stated, “The police and law enforcement agencies need to be restructured. Appointments will be made soon to restore peace and order among the people. The students and citizens currently managing traffic in Dhaka and guarding temples have been praised by everyone. Until the law enforcement agencies return, everyone must remain vigilant. Students and the public must guard against any sabotage or looting and stay alert. Together, the students and people will build a new Bangladesh.”

The meeting with President Mohammad Shahabuddin, which started in the evening, included the chiefs of the three armed forces, 11 coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, Mafuz Alam and Nasir Abdullah from the Liaison Committee, and professors Tanjimuddin Khan and Asif Nazrul from Dhaka University.
