Kamala Harris will officially accept the party’s nomination as a candidate for the presidential election at the Democratic Party convention in Chicago on Thursday. A month of Kamala’s turning point in life is also going to be completed through this.
About a month ago, US President Joe Biden announced that he is not running in the upcoming presidential election. He made the announcement in a post on social media X at 1:46 pm on July 21.
Biden faced opposition within the party after he was caught in a debate with Republican candidate Donald Trump last June. The 81-year-old leader was forced to withdraw his candidature under pressure from party leaders and workers. Many were questioning his age and mental capacity. An assassination attempt on Trump came just a week before Biden announced his withdrawal.
Biden endorsed Kamala Harris 27 minutes after first announcing his withdrawal. He supported Kamala as the candidate of the Democratic Party in the presidential election held on November 5.
In a post on X, Biden said, ‘My first decision after receiving the party’s nomination in 2020 was to make Kamala Harris my vice president. And it was the best decision I ever made. Today I give full support and recognition to Kamala for nominating (presidential candidate) from our party this year.’
Kamala Harris then thanked Biden for his ‘tremendous leadership’. Said he was ‘honoured’ to have Biden’s support.
Kamala vowed to do everything possible to unite the Democratic Party and the people of the country and defeat Donald Trump.
Within hours, governors, senators, former rivals, progressives and reformers were voicing their support. It shows the image of party consensus.
Douglas Emhoff, husband of Kamala Harris, found out the news a little late. Emhoff was attending a Soul Cycle class in Los Angeles when the news broke that Biden was withdrawing his candidacy and endorsing Kamala Harris. He did not have a mobile phone with him. Later, taking the mobile phone, Mhoff saw that many of his missed calls were accumulated. A few calls were also received from his wife’s number.
After learning the news about Kamala Harris, Emhoff joked, ‘Never leaving my phone in the car again.’
‘When we fight, we win’
When Kamala Harris entered the campaign, the election was just three months away. Kamla entered the field with the slogan ‘When we fight, we win’.
“We are going to deliver our message to the people of the United States and we will win,” Kamala told campaign workers in Delaware.
Kamala Harris began campaigning with people who were working for the Biden campaign. He is using the same office and the same logo.
But his rhetoric on the campaign trail is different from Biden’s.
Republican presidential candidate Trump is the first former US president to be charged with a criminal offence. And so Kamla, who served as a one-time counsel and Attorney General of California, is trying to attack Trump with his work experience.
Kamala Harris is also bringing forward the issue of age gap with Trump. Trump is about 20 years older than him. When Biden became the candidate, Trump himself attacked Biden for being too old. He said that Biden is so old that he does not have the physical and mental capacity to be president.
The flow of donations increased after Kamala Harris entered the election campaign. He collected 10 million dollars in 48 hours.
His candidacy has generated enthusiasm among his supporters, not only in opinion polls, but also in his election rallies, which have seen huge crowds.
After campaigning as a potential candidate, Kamala began looking for a vice president for herself. Within a few days he decided on this matter. This process usually takes several months.
On August 6, Kamala announced the 60-year-old governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, as his running mate and vice president. Walz is a former schoolteacher and football coach. Soon after Walz’s name was announced, the two began a five-state tour together.
Kamala will officially accept the party nomination on August 22. And his fate will be determined through the election on November 5.
