A congratulatory message from the foundation sent to Yunus said, ‘On behalf of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, we offer our sincere congratulations to your interim government and the people of Bangladesh.’ The recent political unrest in Bangladesh is a clear manifestation of the desire of the people of the country for an inclusive, corruption-free and democratic government, the message said.
The congratulatory message also said, ‘May this new chapter in your country’s history be defined not by uncertainty or inequality, but by stability and leadership that upholds the fundamental rights of the common man, not a few special groups.’
It should be noted that Dr. Yunus received the 1984 Ramon Magsaysay Award. She was awarded the award in recognition of her microcredit model for empowering rural poor women.
The award is named after the former President of the Philippines, Ramon Magsaysay. Ramon Magsaysay was killed in a plane crash in 1957. Award started from 1958.
