Petang Tarn Shinawatra sworn in as Prime Minister

Phew Thai Party leader Petang Tarn Shinawatra was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Thailand. He was sworn in on Sunday (August 18) after Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn confirmed his appointment as prime minister.

Petangtarn Shinawatra, 37, is the daughter of controversial former Thai prime minister and tycoon Thaksin. In terms of age, he was sworn in as the youngest Prime Minister of the country.

Petangtarn was elected as the Prime Minister by voting in the Parliament of Thailand last Friday. She became the second female Prime Minister of Thailand and the third member of the Shinawatra family.

Earlier, Sretha Thavisin, another Pheu Thai Party leader, was the Prime Minister of the country. A lawyer convicted of corruption had to step down after being accused of ‘violating ethics’ by appointing him as minister.

Thailand’s Constitutional Court ousted Prime Minister Sretha Thavisin on Wednesday. At the same time, the court ruled to dissolve the cabinet.

319 votes were cast in favor of Petangtarn in the vote held in Parliament. And 145 votes against.

Petangtarn is the fourth person from the Shinawatra family to become prime minister in the past two decades. He studied at schools in Thailand and universities in the UK.

Petangtarn entered politics in 2022. Before that he was looking after the family hotel business. Her husband is the deputy chief investment officer of the industry group.
