Internationally renowned human rights lawyer, extradition expert and co-head of London-based Guernica 37 Law firm Toby Cadman met Principal Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the Rashtriya Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Monday.
In the meeting, they discussed the need to establish a domestic tribunal with international support to try those accused of crimes against humanity committed during the student-crowd movement.
Chief Adviser Press Wing quoted Cadman as saying, ‘Bangladesh must urgently establish an effective domestic legal framework, duly supported by the international community and the people of Bangladesh, for truth, justice and accountability.’
Presenting several proposals to the Chief Adviser, Cadman said they are ready to support Bangladesh in its efforts to create a framework for the extradition of individuals involved in crimes against humanity, economic crimes and political corruption, who fled the country with ill-gotten wealth.
The chief counsel heard his proposal and asked him to submit it in writing. He said his government was committed to internationally acceptable justice for those who ordered and carried out the massacres during the student movement. Professor Yunus said that one of the priorities of the interim government is to bring back hundreds of millions of dollars smuggled abroad during the 15-year dictatorial regime of Sheikh Hasina.
