Threats to democracy around the world are growing. Authoritarian rulers want to hold on to power at any cost. US President Joe Biden urged world leaders to be careful about these issues. He made this call in his farewell address as US President at the General Assembly session at the United Nations headquarters in New York last Tuesday local time.
Joe Biden said in his speech, ‘I want to say to the assembled world leaders, you must not forget that there are things that are more important than holding on to power.’
Commenting on the growing threat to democracy around the world, Biden said, ‘I love my country as much as I love my job. After half a century of public service, I have decided to hand over the leadership to the new generation to move the country forward. Addressing the assembled world leaders, he said, ‘All of you must give the highest priority to your own people.’
The US President also said, ‘In the last five decades, I have seen many changes in history. During this time the world went through many crises. We must not forget that we can make this world a better place.’
