The severity of dengue is increasing, there are no effective measures to prevent it

The outbreak of dengue is getting worse all over the country. The number of hospitalizations and deaths due to dengue is increasing every day.

In the last 24 hours, 1,152 people have been admitted to hospital due to dengue. At the same time, five people died due to dengue.

As of September 30 this year, 30,938 people have been admitted to hospital with dengue. And so far 163 people have died of dengue.

Experts blame the rise in dengue cases this year on the lack of proper mosquito control at the local level, a slowdown in the city corporation’s mosquito control during the student protests, and the short tenure of new administrators in the absence of a mayor. Lack of adequate preparation.

Experts say that the outbreak of dengue has started in the country since 2000, and integrated dengue control management has not been developed to prevent dengue in two long years. It is important to take a coordinated initiative by public-private organizations and citizens to control dengue. If dengue is not controlled through the concerted participation of all, there may be a major disaster in the coming days.

According to the sources of the Department of Health, in January this year, 1,55 people were admitted to the hospital with dengue and 14 people died. In February, 339 people were hospitalized with dengue and three died. In March, 311 people were hospitalized, five died. In April, 504 people were admitted and two died.

In May, 644 people were hospitalized with dengue and 12 died. In June, 798 people were admitted and eight people died. In July, 2,269 people were admitted and 12 died. In August, 6,521 people were hospitalized with dengue and 27 people died. In September, 18 thousand 97 people were admitted to the hospital, 80 people died.

Analyzing the data of the Department of Health, it can be seen that the number of deaths due to dengue in 2023 will surpass all previous records. That year, 1,705 people died of dengue, the highest in the country’s history. The previous year in 2022, 868 people died of dengue. This year, hospitalization and death rates are low, but at the end of September, the number of patients in hospitals has increased, and deaths have also increased.

Public health and entomologists have given an advance warning that the severity of dengue may increase if the monsoon ends this year. Concerned people think that the outbreak of dengue is increasing due to not taking this warning into consideration and not taking any visible effective measures.

Dengue control is lacking in some places, public health expert and director of Health and Hope Specialized Hospital and public health expert Dr. Lelin Chowdhury told Banglanews that dengue would increase – there was already a prediction. This time the monsoon has started a little late, so the outbreak of dengue has also started late. We are afraid that the dengue season will be long this time. The rate at which dengue is increasing is alarming. We know that if the Aedes mosquito breeding environment is created, dengue will increase.

He also said that the first initiative to control dengue is the elimination of Aedes mosquitoes. This work is done by the local government, or subordinate organizations. But in the current political situation, there have been changes everywhere, including the city corporation. Those who came in charge could not revive the dengue control works. As a result mosquitoes grew unhindered.

The public health officer also said that dengue outbreak started in our country since 2000. Even in about 24-25 years, no central plan has been developed to control dengue. Under the central plan, the central and local governments could not take any concerted initiative to control mosquitoes across the country, involving volunteers and the public. Presently the reforming government should undertake mass mosquito eradication program through which dengue will be controlled. Otherwise the coming days will be a miserable curse for us.

Dr. Entomologist and Zoology Department teacher of Jahangirnagar University. Kabirul Bashar said, we can see that the density of Aedes mosquitoes is increasing. As the density of mosquitoes increases, the situation of Aedes mosquitoes will worsen in the coming days, if we do not control it now.

He also said that we have been saying since two months ago that the dengue situation will worsen in September. But no action was taken during the dengue peak time apart from normal activities. People are dying every day due to corruption.

According to the data of the Department of Health, 44 percent of the patients admitted to the hospital this year are residents of the two city corporations of Dhaka. Dr. South City chief health officer to know about mosquito killing activities. Calls to the phone numbers of Fazle Shamsul Kabir and Dhaka North City Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury were not answered.

The situation of dengue in the country is increasing at an alarming rate, said AF Hasan Arif, Advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives of the Interim Government.

He said, it is not possible to prevent dengue by showing people. Everyone has to take responsibility from their own place. Awareness of each of us will play the most effective role in preventing dengue.
