The government plans to import 1 million metric tons of rice and wheat to ensure adequate reserves and stable supply, according to Food Advisor Ali Imam Majumder. He also mentioned that the country currently has a stock of approximately 1.3 million metric tons of rice and wheat.
Key Announcements
During a press briefing following the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee meeting held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, January 22, the Food Advisor shared the following details:
- Stock Levels:
- 882,000 metric tons of rice
- 341,000 metric tons of wheat
- Import Plan:
The government aims to maintain imports despite upcoming domestic harvests. About 1 million metric tons of rice and wheat are already in the pipeline for importation from countries like India, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Vietnam.
Domestic Collection Challenges
The Food Advisor highlighted a shortfall in domestic rice collection during the Aus and Aman harvest seasons. He expressed optimism about the upcoming Boro season, noting that a good harvest could reduce the country’s reliance on imports. However, to ensure stability, the government is continuing its import activities.
Rice Prices
In response to a journalist’s question about market prices, the Food Advisor remarked that rice prices are stable and have not increased. He added that a further decrease in rice prices would be welcomed.
This proactive import strategy demonstrates the government’s commitment to food security while balancing local production and international supply.
