Deterioration of flood situation due to torrential rains

Several upazilas of Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Feni, Noakhali, Khagrachari and Chittagong have been flooded due to heavy rains coming down from India. The districts are adjacent to Tripura in India. The flood situation has worsened in these districts till the last news on Thursday morning. The rain continues. The Meteorological Office has forecast another 48 hours of rain.

According to the 10 am information on the website of Bangladesh Water Development Board’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, the water of Kushiara, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai, Muhuri, Feni and Halda rivers is flowing over the boundary line. Among them, the water of Muhuri river in Feni is flowing at the highest height in the last 40 years.

According to the information provided by Prothom Alo journalists from these eight districts, many roads, dams and parts of bridges have been broken by the water. Crop fields are flooded, fish in ponds are washed away. Hundreds of thousands of people have been trapped in water. Many have settled in shelters with their families.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center in today’s bulletin said heavy to very heavy rains are lashing India’s border areas of Tripura and the inner basin of Tripura. Due to this, the existing flood situation in the lower areas of Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Feni, Comilla and Chittagong districts has deteriorated somewhat.

Water Development Board sub-divisional engineer Habib Reza said that the water of Khoai River in Habiganj is flowing over 195 cm above the water level. It is still raining in the district. In the last 24 hours, the district has received 175 mm of rain.

Dam broke in Akhaura in Brahmanbaria. The overall flood situation has worsened in this district. More than 500 families in 34 villages are affected by floods.

Gomti river has cracked in Kamarkhara part of Comilla’s Burichong upazila. Water is coming through the cracks. More than five hundred family members have taken refuge in the embankment. At 10 am today, the surface is visible, Kamarkhara in the northern part of Alekharchar Bridge. The water lifting line in the dam of this part burst and water came out. At that time, the local people filled the sacks with soil and strengthened the dam.

Local resident Enamul Haque said that the condition of embankment has been bad for two days. In the morning water was flowing over Bipatsima. At this time, a crack appeared in the blacksmith’s section. A resident named Anisur Rahman said, he has a fish cage. He is spending three consecutive nights without sleep.

Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman, executive engineer of Comilla Water Development Board, said that at 7 am today, the water was flowing over 70 cm above the danger line. Water may rise further. And Meteorological Office official Syed Arifur Rahman said that 220 millimeters of rain has fallen in Comilla in the last 24 hours. Rain is forecast for another 48 hours.

Water has increased in eight upazilas of Noakhali. It has been raining continuously for four days. The flood situation is worsening due to water logging. The flood situation has worsened in Senbagh, Begumganj, Companyganj, Sonaimuri, Chatkhil and Noakhali Sadar of the district. The situation in Kabirhat and Subarnachar is slightly better than the rest of the upazilas. Rafiqul Islam, observer of Noakhali Meteorological Center, said that 133 millimeters of rain has fallen in Noakhali in the last 24 hours. He predicted rain for another 48 hours.

Houses drowned again after 24 hours in Khagrachari. Thousands of families are currently under water in 9 upazilas of the district. On Tuesday afternoon, the low-lying areas of Khagrachhari were flooded due to landslides and heavy rains. When the water receded, people left the shelters for their homes on Wednesday morning. But today, Thursday, from 5 am, the water suddenly came down. Water levels continue to rise in most of the low-lying areas of the city.

Landslides have occurred in some areas of the district town including Nancy Bazar, Shalbon, Kalabagan and Comilla Tila. Mohini Devi Chakma (67) of Khagrachari Narankhaiya area said that she had never seen such a flood at such a young age.
