BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the BNP is against banning any political party, emphasizing that creating issues out of non-issues is merely a new form of conspiracy.
He made these remarks on Saturday (November 2) when questioned by journalists as he was leaving a memorial event at the BRAC Center in Mohakhali, Dhaka, held in honor of the second death anniversary of the late diplomat Sabih Uddin Ahmed.
Fakhrul reiterated BNP’s stance, saying, “We are not in favor of banning any political party. Unnecessary issues are being created, and there might be conspiracies behind this. Bringing up a non-issue, like the Jatiya Party issue, is simply another attempt at a conspiracy.”
Earlier, Fakhrul had spoken at the memorial event hosted by Sabih Uddin Ahmed’s family, honoring his legacy as a diplomat and adviser to the BNP chairperson. Reflecting on their past, he mentioned the dedication of former students like Salahuddin, who was once president of the Dhaka University Student Union, and shared their common vision of societal change.
Remembering Sabih Uddin Ahmed as a patriot and a nationalist, Fakhrul remarked, “Ahmed devoted his life to democracy and the welfare of the people. He was a spirited individual and a sports enthusiast, with whom we shared many ups and downs. He would have been happy to see a Bangladesh free of fascism.”
The memorial was attended by the interim government’s Economic Adviser Saleh Uddin Ahmed, journalist Shafik Rehman, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, *Daily Star* editor Mahfuz Anam, and other long-time colleagues and well-wishers, who paid tribute to Sabih Uddin Ahmed’s enduring legacy.
