Report Submitted by Four Reform Commissions to the Chief Advisor

The heads of four reform commissions have submitted their reports to the Chief Advisor of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

On Wednesday (January 15) at around 11:30 AM, they submitted the reports at the Chief Advisor’s office in Tejgaon.

The Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, confirmed the proposals of the Constitutional Reform Commission in a Facebook post.

The commissions that submitted reports are the Election Commission, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Police Reform Commission, and the Constitutional Reform Commission.

Sources stated that discussions will be held on the reports after submission. Currently, a meeting is ongoing between the Chief Advisor and the heads of the four reform commissions. A press conference at 3 PM is scheduled to inform the media about these matters in detail on behalf of the government.

The Press Wing of the Chief Advisor’s Office informed that after the report submission, the Chief Advisor held a meeting with the heads of the four reform commissions. Summaries of the reports were presented during the meeting. The Chief Advisor is expected to discuss these reports further with political parties and other stakeholders.

Earlier, at 10:30 AM, the four commission heads entered the Chief Advisor’s office in Tejgaon.

The commission heads are:

  • Professor Dr. Ali Riaz, head of the Constitutional Reform Commission,
  • Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Election System Reform Commission,
  • Sarfaraz Hossain, head of the Police Administration Reform Commission, and
  • Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, head of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

It has been learned that the reports from these four commissions include significant proposals for structural reforms, including changes to the power structure and parliamentary system.

Background:
On August 5, following political changes, demands for state reform intensified in Bangladesh. In response, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus initially announced the appointment of six prominent individuals to oversee reforms in six key institutions and organizations.

Subsequently, on October 7, a nine-member Constitutional Reform Commission was formed with Professor Ali Riaz as the head, tasked with reviewing and assessing the existing constitution and preparing a report with necessary recommendations for reform.

Over three months, the commission collected opinions from citizens, political parties, and other stakeholders. It gathered feedback from nearly 100,000 individuals and reviewed the constitutions of various countries.

Based on these inputs, the commission has reportedly prepared a five-volume report.
