5.7 magnitude earthquake shakes Philippines

The quake was felt south of the Philippine capital Manila. Its magnitude on the Richter scale was 5.7. According to a report by Qatar-based Al Jazeera, the quake was felt late Monday (September 26th).

The epicentre was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor; however, no tsunami alert was issued. Homes in the country’s capital, Manila, were shaken. The tremors woke people up, and many rushed out of the house in a panic.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake had at least 74 kilometres (46 miles) below the surface. The epicentre was reported below the ground in the province of Occidental Mindoro.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage. However, citing residents, the media reported that the quake was powerful.

“The epicentre was reported below the ground; however, no damage or casualties have been reported so far due to the quake.

Leonardo Tristan, disaster management officer for Occidental Mindoro Island, said many people rushed out of their homes in panic after the powerful quake.
