Afghan embassy in India closed, top diplomats seek asylum in US

The Indian embassy in Afghanistan has suspended all kinds of activities. Several local experts have reportedly sought refuge in Europe and the United States at the embassy. Embassy employees disclosed this information on Friday.

After taking responsibility for Afghanistan in 2021, India closed its embassy in Kabul. However, India allows Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s endorsed diplomats and mission staff to continue working. India has not recognized the Taliban government.

Embassy officials said that at least five Afghan diplomats of India have left their posts. One Afghan official said that the Indian government would now assume responsibility for the embassy complex.

Several countries in Kabul are representing themselves at the minimum level, one of which is India. They are engaged in trade, humanitarian assistance, and medical support. Between the two countries, the volume of trade in 2019-2020 was $1.5 billion. However, after the Taliban took over, this has diminished considerably.

In India, hundreds of Afghan students enrolled in colleges have been demonstrating in Delhi in recent months. They demand an extension of their visas. Although their visas have expired, they are still in India.
