UN passes resolution on ‘extended humanitarian pause’ in Gaza

The United Nations Security Council has accepted a proposal urging an “enhanced humanitarian ceasefire” in the ongoing conflict in Gaza to facilitate humanitarian assistance. The proposal also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of prisoners. The proposal was presented on Wednesday in the Security Council. Out of the 15 members of the Security Council, 12 countries voted in favor of the proposal. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia abstained from voting.

The proposal appeals to various United Nations agencies, the Red Cross, and other “impartial” humanitarian organizations to provide assistance for a sufficient period to establish an extended humanitarian pause and open corridors.
