Assembly elections: Congress debacle in Mizoram too

After securing victories in the legislative elections in North, West, and Central India, the Congress party is also making significant strides in Northeastern India, particularly in Mizoram. However, the chances of Congress winning in this northeastern state were not high. Nevertheless, they did not manage to increase their seat count; instead, the party lost three seats compared to the previous elections.

According to the results declared yesterday, in Mizoram’s 40-member legislative assembly, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), led by former Member of Parliament Lalduhoma, is poised to form the government for the first time. They defeated the ruling Mizo National Front led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga.

ZPM has been critical of the policies of the BJP government, and as a result, it enjoys popularity in Mizoram. The Congress party has lost three seats compared to 2018 but remains a part of the opposition alliance against the BJP-led coalition.

The Congress party has lost three seats compared to 2018, securing only one seat under the leadership of the anti-BJP alliance. In contrast, the BJP has increased its seats from one to two in the state.

The ZPM is a coalition of six local parties and civil society organizations, namely the Mizoram People’s Conference, Zoram Nationalist Party, Zoram Exodus Movement, Zoram Centralization Front, Zoram Reformation Front, and Mizoram People’s Party. They formed the alliance in 2017, led by former police officer Lalduhoma.
