Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Monday inaugurated the “Bangabandhu Lounge” at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations as part of the celebration of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
During the inauguration, the Foreign Minister said, “Various aspects of the life and work of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman have been highlighted in the lounge through various books, pictures, documentaries and graphical displays.” This collection of Bangabandhu Lounge seems to have highlighted the deep trust and faith of the Father of the Nation in multilateralism, especially in the United Nations. ‘
The Foreign Minister expressed interest in providing more books and exhibition materials on the Father of the Nation in the lounge.
Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations ambassador Rabab Fatima said, It is a great pleasure that we have finally got the Foreign Minister to inaugurate the lounge. I believe the lounge will remind the missionaries of the Father of the Nation’s dream and ideals of world peace. “
The lounge will remind the well-wishers of the mission of the dream and ideals of the Father of the Nation towards world peace. The lounge will be used for meetings of high-level representatives of the United Nations and member states visiting the mission. As a result, they will have the opportunity to get a broad idea about the life style of the father of the nation.
Bangladesh became a member of the United Nations in 1974 under the leadership of the Father of the Nation. Since then, Bangladesh has made significant contributions to the multilateral system. Bangladesh is currently the Vice-Chairman of the Executive Board of UNDP, UNFPA, UNOPS, the Facilitator of the International Consultation on the Classification of UN General Assembly Agendas and the Vice-Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for the Fifth UN LDC Conference.
On Monday afternoon, Foreign Minister Momen held a bilateral meeting with Atul Khar, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support.
During the talks, the Foreign Minister reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to UN peacekeeping operations.
Under-Secretary-General Khar also praised Bangladesh for its outstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.
The Foreign Minister has been in New York since June 13 on an official visit to attend various UN programs.
He will attend a joint thematic meeting on LDCs at the UN General Assembly. In addition to bilateral meetings with UN Secretary General, President of the General Assembly and senior UN officials, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh, UN Headquarters and other member states will hold ‘Current Situation in Myanmar: Situation of Rohingya Minority’ and ‘Sustainable Reconciliation of Least Developed Countries’ The Foreign Minister will attend the virtual event.
