Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday said the government has been trying its best to execute the verdict of the jail killing case.
He said this after placing wreaths at the portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders at the old jail on Nazim Uddin Road in the capital this morning on the occasion of the Jail Killing Day.
Tanjim Ahmed Sohail Taj and Simin Hossain Rimi, son and daughter of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed, Rezaul Karim, son of Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali, lawmaker of Dhaka-7 constituency Haji Mohammad Selim, former lawmaker Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General ASM Anisul Haque and many others paid their respects with flowers to the portraits.
Kamal, also a freedom fighter, said that two heinous murders had taken place in the country, one of them is Bangabandhu assassination on 15 August, 1975 and the other is jail killing on 3 November, 1975.
“Everyone knows who had done this. Trails of many killers have been completed. Prisons are the safest place in the world. But everyone knows how this murder was committed by breaking the law,” the home minister said.
He said the trial of Bangabandhu’s assassination has been held and the verdict has been partially executed, adding, “We are finding out for the fugitive accused. The death sentence will be effective only when we can bring the accused under our control. We are trying our best to execute the verdict of jail killing case.”
Referring the 1977 military coup, the minister said that Ziaur Rahman had killed hundreds of people in the name of the military coup, which was a disgusting incident.
“There is a writ petition in the High Court in this regard. We are waiting for the verdict of the writ petition. We want the culprits to be brought to justice,” he added.
“If Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wanted, she could have tried Bangabandhu’s assassins in a military court. But she did not do it. Those who killed Bangabandhu have been tried in the conventional justice system. They have been executed. The defunct BDR case has been tried and is now pending in the higher court,” Kamal said.
