Rocket attack near U.S. embassy in Baghdad

The bomber struck shortly afternoon in front of a U.S. embassy in the Green Zone, a diplomatic area in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. On Sunday (December 19), two rocket attacks took place in the room with state-of-the-art security. This information was given by the news agency AFP in a report on Sunday.

The Iraqi security forces said that two Katyusha rockets had been fired at Baghdad’s Green Zone at midnight. A C-RAM defense battery destroyed the first rocket. However, the second rocket hit inside, and two vehicles were damaged.

An Iraqi security source told AFP the rocket landed near the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone. On the other hand, the distance between the U.S. embassy and the place where the second rocket hit is about 500 meters (1640 feet).

However, shortly after the attack, it was initially claimed that two rockets had been fired at the U.S. embassy. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

There have been several rockets or drone strikes targeting the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in recent months. Anti-US rebel groups mainly carry out such attacks. These groups oppose the U.S. military presence in the country.
