US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy is ousted

In the history of the United States, for the first time, a Speaker of Congress has been removed from office through a vote. Yesterday, on October 2, the lawmakers of the lower house voted to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy through a vote of no confidence.

208 members of the powerless Democratic party, along with some from other parties, voted against Kevin McCarthy out of the 216 members present in the House. Surprisingly, even 8 members from McCarthy’s own Republican party voted against him, while he received 210 votes in favor.

Alleging that McCarthy is not taking adequate steps to reduce the expenses of the central government of the United States, right-wing Republican lawmaker Matt Gates proposed McCarthy’s removal in the House last Monday. He is elected from the state of Florida and is known for his opposition to McCarthy.

After being removed, Patrick McHenry, also a Republican lawmaker, has been given the responsibility of interim Speaker. He is also a legal expert from the Republican party. It is speculated that potential candidates for the next Speaker in the lower house of the Congress are Republican leaders Steve Scalise and Tom Emmer.
