Mymensingh: 12,000 hectares of saplings and vegetable fields in the district have been submerged in water due to continuous rains for two days. Also, fish worth hundreds of crores of rupees have been washed away from thousands of ponds and fish enclosures.
Hundreds of thousands of farmers and fishermen of this district have faced huge losses.
However, as of Saturday (October 7) afternoon, attempts are being made to determine the extent of the loss to the fishermen of the district.
Incessant rains washed away large quantities of fish from thousands of commercially farmed ponds and enclosures in the district. It also caused extensive damage to the infrastructure of the ponds and fish enclosures. The extent of the damage is not yet known, but efforts are underway to assess it.
Meanwhile, 11 thousand 420 hectares of Ropa Aman paddy land of this district has been submerged under water due to continuous rains, said Deputy Director of Mymensingh Agricultural Extension Directorate. Matiuzzaman. Also, 690 hectares of vegetable crops are submerged under water.
This agriculture official said that if the water is removed quickly in this situation, there will not be much damage to the agricultural crops. But he also said that farmers will be affected if the water is permanent.
According to sources, almost all the upazilas of the district including Trishal, Phulbaria, Bhaluka, Gouripur, Sadar, Muktagacha are widely known for fishing. Thousands of ponds and enclosures are used for commercial fish farming in these areas. As a result, due to continuous rains, these ponds and enclosures went under water and fish worth hundreds of crores of rupees went to open water bodies.
Although the fish farmers have been greatly affected, the local residents have become enamored of fishing in the surrounding water bodies, crop lands, drains, canals and banks. As a result, low-income people are hunting these fish and selling them in the bazaar.
Abdul Hamid of Zorbaria village of Fulbaria upazila of the district said, I caught fish of several thousand rupees by throwing a net as the fish were washed away by the rain. Hundreds of other people like me are fishing like this. He also said that the fish farmers have been greatly affected by this.
