The 25th Session of the National Parliament of Bangladesh Begins Today

The 25th session of the National Parliament of Bangladesh, the last session of the current government, will begin today at 4 p.m.

The session will be held in the parliament chamber of the National Parliament Building in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will preside over the session.

The decision on how long the session will last will be made at a meeting of the parliamentary business advisory committee before the session begins.

According to the parliamentary secretariat, there are about two dozen bills pending for introduction and passage in the current session. It is said that several bills will be passed. However, if any bill introduced is not passed and there is no other session of the current parliament, it will lapse.

Earlier, on October 5, President Mohammad Shahabuddin summoned the 25th session of the National Parliament of Bangladesh using the power conferred upon him under Article 72 (1) of the Constitution. The 24th session of the current parliament was concluded after nine sittings on September 14.

The Constitution states that there should be no break of more than 60 days between the end of one session and the first meeting of the next session. Therefore, a session is usually called once in two months. However, this provision does not apply to the 90 days before the expiry of the term of the parliament (during the next national parliamentary election).

According to the announcement of the Election Commission, the 12th parliamentary election will be held in the last week of this year or the first week of January. Accordingly, the Election Commission is also preparing formally.

The five-year term of the 11th National Parliament of Bangladesh is due to expire on January 19, 2024. The first session was held on January 30, 2019.
