Uncertainty over Ukraine, US and EU aid in new crisis over winter

Like last year, Russia could launch a new destructive attack in Ukraine during this winter. In anticipation of this challenging situation due to low electricity supply, the Ukrainian government, under President Volodymyr Zelensky, has begun preparations for confrontation.

However, concerns have arisen that in this crisis winter, both America and the countries of Western Europe may face economic challenges in providing assistance. A message from the office of U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday has cautioned the Congress, stating that the funds approved for aiding Ukraine may run out by the end of the coming year.

On the other hand, the European Union is struggling to reach an agreement on a new $540 million aid package. There is fear that Ukraine may face a crisis in this situation.

Ukrainian President Zelensky recently announced the reinforcement of air defense systems along the western border. This is because, as in the previous winter, there is a perception that Russian forces may launch attacks on power centers again. They have also warned that Russia may attempt to disrupt Ukraine’s energy and gas infrastructure.

Notably, last year, Russian forces continuously attacked Ukraine’s power generation centers during the winter. With snow covering Ukraine due to heavy snowfall, life without electricity is almost impossible. According to a review, due to the Russian attacks, nearly a million residents of Ukraine are facing the consequences of the energy crisis. The heating systems in many homes covered with snow are not functioning. Water and food supply lines are also becoming frozen.
