Today, on December 10th, marks the death anniversary of the Swedish scientist and inventor Alfred Nobel. Every year on this day, the Nobel Prizes, the most prestigious awards in the world named after him, are awarded to distinguished individuals.
Alfred Nobel, who revolutionized mining and road construction with the invention of dynamite, amassed considerable wealth from the profits of his inventions. The Nobel Prizes find their origin in the funds generated from his inventions.
In the Swedish capital, Stockholm, at the Concert Hall, the day will commence at 10 a.m. with the traditional ceremony announcing the laureates of the 2023 Nobel Prizes. The award distribution ceremony will follow in the afternoon, starting at 4 p.m.
King Carl Gustaf of Sweden, along with members of the royal family, will be present to confer the awards according to tradition. The ceremony will also be attended by distinguished individuals, including members of the Swedish Parliament and Cabinet, as well as relatives of the laureates. Invitations are extended to members of the Swedish Parliament to attend the Nobel Prize distribution ceremony as a customary practice.
While invitations were not extended to members of the ultranationalist Danish People’s Party in previous years, this year they have also been invited. However, notably absent from the invitations are diplomats from Russia, a close ally, and neighboring countries Belarus and Iran, presumably due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In addition to the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, an event hosted by Norway, the concert hall will be adorned with fresh flowers sent from Italy. In the evening, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and renowned singer Julia Sporsen will perform at the Blue Hall of the Stockholm City Hall. The Nobel Banquet, featuring a three-course menu with lingonberry fruit, seafood, and local delicacies, will commence at 7 p.m.
The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in Oslo, Norway, at the Oslo Town Hall at 1 p.m. This year, the Nobel Peace laureate is Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who will be awarded the prize in absentia, as she is currently imprisoned.
