The activities of Chittagong Textile Engineering College located in Zorarganj of Mirsarai Upazila are going on in full swing. The dilapidated building is teaching with half of the required teachers.
It is known that this institution established in 1911 as Perry Pathetic Weaving School was shifted to the present campus in 1960 on 15 acres of land. In 1980, a two-year certificate course in textile technology was introduced at the Peripatetic Weaving School.
In 1993, a three-year diploma course was introduced under the Bangladesh Technical Education Board. Since 2001, this course has been conducted for four years. Considering the high demand of textile engineers, the government canceled the textile diploma course in the 2006-2007 session and brought the institution under the Bangladesh Textile University and introduced a four-year B.Sc. in Textile Engineering course in textile engineering. This institution has a reputation among the eight textile engineering colleges in the country.
However, the lab equipment cannot be maintained in the old building. Projectors are less than the demand. The library does not have foreign journals for research. Moss has grown on the walls of the administrative building. The plaster of the roof is falling. Hostel environment is unhealthy. The light-fan in the classroom is broken.
College teachers said that currently around 550 students are studying in four departments. Departments have more workload than manpower. Teaching is being done with guest teachers due to shortage of teachers. Besides, there is shortage of teachers and staff quarters. Vacancies cannot be filled due to non-promotion due to complexity of recruitment rules. The college also does not have its own vehicle.
Md. A student named Zubair said, being far away from the city, the guest teachers set the class schedule according to their convenience. It destroys the continuity of the class. The playground is submerged in water. The college is in full swing.
Chief Engineer of Chittagong Textile Engineering College. Ali Azam Rokan said that 50 percent of the posts created in technical departments are vacant. One of South Asia’s smart textile testing living labs will be established in the college at a cost of around 272 crores financed by ADB. Project work will start soon.
