Exactly 51 years ago today, the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was formally presented with the ‘Julio Curie’ Peace Medal. Not only was the medal presented to the Father of the Nation, but the World Peace Council also honored Bangabandhu with the title of ‘World Friend.’
On October 10, 1972, at a meeting of the Presidential Committee of the World Peace Council in Santiago, the capital of Chile, it was unanimously decided to award the Julio Curie Peace Medal to the Father of the Bengali Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
On May 23, 1973, at the Asian Peace Conference in Dhaka, the Julio Curie Medal was handed over to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, by the Secretary-General of the World Peace Council, Romesh Chandra. In his speech that day, Bangabandhu also spoke about the oppressed and persecuted people around the world.
After the World Peace Council began in 1949, the Peace Medal was first awarded in 1950. Following the death of French physicist Frédéric Joliot-Curie in 1958, the Peace Medal was named the Julio Curie Peace Medal from 1959 onwards. This medal is awarded to those who play a leading role in opposing imperialism and fascism, and in establishing humanity and world peace.
