Since 2007, the people of Khagrachari have once again witnessed a devastating flood this year.
On Friday (August 2), the district experienced flooding.
Due to continuous heavy rainfall, the mountainous runoff and flooding have inundated vast areas of Khagrachari Municipality and the sadar upazila. The water levels of the Chengi and Maini rivers are flowing above the danger mark.
The Chengi River has overflowed its banks, flooding several areas of the municipality, including Muslimpara, Shantinigar, Bangalkati, Khobongpurya, Rajyamanipara, Football, and Bottali. Thousands of families have been trapped by the water. The municipal bus terminal, the lower market, and nearby areas are submerged. Water flowing over the Khagrachari-Chittagong main road has disrupted vehicle movement.
Additionally, in the sadar upazila’s Kamalchhari and Golabari unions, as well as several villages in Ganjapara, around 300 homes have been affected. With water reaching waist and neck levels on the roads, villagers are confined to their homes.
While past floods have been caused by several days of heavy rainfall, this time, a single night of torrential rain has submerged most areas of Khagrachari. Areas that were initially only slightly flooded by morning had become largely submerged by the afternoon.
Khagrachari Municipal Mayor Nirmlendu Choudhury reported that 6,000 to 7,000 families have been affected by the flood. The municipality has opened 25 shelters and is providing food for those taking refuge there.
Khagrachari District Commissioner Md. Shahiduzzaman mentioned that shelters have been set up for flood victims and those living in risky hillside areas due to the severe rainfall. The district administration is prepared to handle any situation.
As of the writing of this report, the flood situation remains unchanged.
