People’s life disrupted by flood water in Lakshmipur. Water-borne diseases have appeared along with various sufferings including food shortages.
Residents living in contaminated water are suffering from various skin diseases including diarrhea, scabies. Their feet were bruised as they waded through the floodwaters.
On Saturday (August 31) afternoon, such a picture was seen in North Durgapur, Jadaiya and Mohammadnagar in Mandari Union of Sadar Upazila. Residents complained that despite receiving dry food as relief, no one received medicine for skin disease.
Laili Begum, a resident of Bhuiya house in Durgapur village of Mandari, told Banglanews that water has risen inside my house due to floods. The raw house was destroyed. The mud and water of the house started to get on the feet, causing sores on the bottom of the feet and between the toes.
Khokon Bhuiyan, a resident of the same house, said that it has become polluted due to the accumulation of flood water for a long time. Somewhere the water is blocked for a month, somewhere 20 to 25 days. These waters are now polluted. Itching starts on contact with water.
He said that most of the people in the area have skin diseases. Some have itching, some have sores on the soles of their feet or between their toes. In addition to relief, skin diseases need medicine at the moment. Many people who are stuck in water can’t go far to fetch medicine after treading polluted water. There is no financial solvency.
Kamal Uddin, a construction worker, said that there was water in the house. Above the knee on the road. One has to step out of the house four to six times a day. Now the whole body itches. Wounds on the soles of the feet.
Siraj Hossain said, small holes have been formed under the feet. Still, every day we have to step out of the house through polluted water. My wife’s diaries have appeared at home.
Nur Hossain said, he does not want to go into the water. There is a wound between the fingers. Now it burns when water touches it.
Shilpi Begum said, new diseases have appeared. No money to buy food, how to buy medicine? Fever or pain with relief or Orsaline. But no allergy medicine has been given yet.
Local drug dealer. Saiful Islam said, water-borne diseases have increased all around at the moment. Many people have diarrhea, itching, scabies and other diseases. Such patients come to my shop and take medicine. Diseases started when flood water became contaminated.
District Civil Surgeon Ahmed Kabir told BanglaNews that we have 64 medical teams in the district. Apart from this, treatment is being provided at district headquarter hospitals and upazila health complexes. Through medical teams and volunteer teams are campaigning in flood affected areas and providing treatment.
