United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi has stated that despite the complex situation in Myanmar, the Rohingya issue must be addressed with urgency.
On Thursday (February 27), following a meeting with the interim government’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, Md. Touhid Hossain, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UNHCR High Commissioner made these remarks in response to journalists’ questions.
Filippo Grandi expressed his gratitude to Bangladesh for its continuous hospitality towards the Rohingya, despite various challenges. He stated, “We have had discussions, and I always agree that the solution to the Rohingya crisis lies in Myanmar. However, the situation in Myanmar is highly complex. There are ongoing conflicts and various forms of unrest there.”
An international conference on the Rohingya crisis is scheduled to take place this year. Highlighting UNHCR’s support for the event, the High Commissioner said, “In the coming months, there will be an international conference on the Rohingya situation, and UNHCR will extend its support.”
UNHCR Chief Filippo Grandi arrived in Bangladesh on Wednesday (February 26) for a four-day visit.
