Bangladesh-UK wants defense dialogue to increase military cooperation

Bangladesh and the United Kingdom want to have a dialogue on defense to increase bilateral military cooperation. This dialogue could take place later this year.

The issue was discussed in London on Thursday (September 9th) between Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen and Philip Burton, the Under Secretary of State for the United Kingdom.

A statement from the UK Embassy in Dhaka said that the two countries welcomed bilateral cooperation in bilateral military cooperation, including training, professional military education and instructional exchanges, and hoped to open a defense dialogue later this year.

In addition, the United Kingdom and Bangladesh have agreed to co-operate with each other in addressing global challenges, including conflict prevention, counter-terrorism, and support for rule-based international discipline.

Meanwhile, the UK has expressed concern over some issues related to human rights in Bangladesh (such as the impact of the Digital Security Act, extrajudicial arrests, judicial proceedings and killings) that have emerged in the UK State Department’s annual human rights report.

Both countries agreed on the importance of free, fair and impartial elections, the presence of civil society in the development of accountable governance, and freedom of expression and religion.
