UN is set to hold more meetings this week on the Ukraine war

The United Nations will hold several meetings this week on the Russian attack on Ukraine. However, it is unclear whether any formal proposal will be taken in these meetings. The diplomats said this.

The Security Council will discuss the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on Monday. Although it is an annual meeting, it will focus specifically on the Ukraine war and call for peace.

Meanwhile, a proposal initiated by France and Mexico has been under discussion for the past two weeks. The proposal will be put to the vote in early March, but the deadline has not yet been set.

The Security Council requested that in addition to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s ongoing inspections in Ukraine, it monitor Russia’s compliance with “the steps required by the IAEA Board.” The council will also call for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians.

But the proposal is at risk from Russia’s veto because Moscow has been rejecting all political statements of the proposal.

For this reason, the proposal of many should be submitted directly to the UN General Assembly because no one in the General Assembly has any veto power. But there is an obligation to accept the Security Council resolution, but not the General Assembly resolution.

It may be mentioned that a resolution was passed in the General Assembly on March 2. It condemned the Russian attack on neighboring Ukraine and demanded the immediate withdrawal of troops.

In the General Assembly, 141 countries voted in favor of the resolution, five against and 35 abstained.
