Prime Minister’s proposal for foreign investment in Bay of Bengal fishing

The Prime Minister proposed foreign investment for fishing in Bangladesh’s marine areas in the Bay of Bengal. He made this proposal at the opening ceremony of the Food Systems Summit + 2 Stocktaking Moment at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, Italy on Monday.

Pointing out that about one-third of the food produced worldwide is wasted every year, Sheikh Hasina said in the proposal: To prevent this wastage, a massive social movement should be built involving the youth. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has proposed five points at the United Nations ‘Food System’ conference to ensure a sustainable, safe and nutritious food system worldwide.

In the first proposal, Sheikh Hasina emphasized the need to encourage multilateral development banks and private entrepreneurs to invest in modern agriculture.

Calling for the continuation of the initiative taken by the UN Secretary General, the Black Sea Crops Agreement, the Prime Minister said in the second proposal: Any kind of trade barriers, especially restrictions on the export of food and fertilizers should be removed.
In the fourth proposal, the Prime Minister said: Nano-technology, bio-informatics and advanced agricultural technology should be made available to all in keeping with the fourth industrial revolution.

Describing the need to transition to a sustainable food system in the face of the climate crisis, he said, “We need to identify what needs to be done without further delay.”

Referring to rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, widespread floods and variable rainfall in different parts of the world, Sheikh Hasina said, the rise in sea level and salinity intrusion in our coastal land in Bangladesh has adversely affected rice production. Arable land is decreasing every year in Bangladesh due to river erosion, urbanization, industrial growth and other factors.

Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abi Ahmed, Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Prime Minister of Samoa Fiume Naomi Matafa and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres spoke at the opening ceremony.
